How to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Backsplash

In the world of kitchen remodeling, cabinets and countertops get all the attention. They may take up the largest chunk of the budget, but that doesn’t mean they’re the only focal points. Your perfect kitchen backsplash is also a key element of the makeover. In the guide below, we’ll help you select the perfect kitchen backsplash for your upcoming makeover.

Do You Want Tile or a Stone Slab Backsplash?

There are many types of kitchen backsplashes to choose from, but most homeowners opt for stone or tile. If you have granite or manufactured stone countertops, you could get a matching backsplash to go along the walls. This option is not ideal for all applications, and it can be costly to install. The stone is heavy and requires sturdy bracing to secure to the walls. It is also difficult to cut around the cabinet layout.

For most modern kitchen designs, tile is the way to go. It is customizable, much easier to install, and more cost-effective in the long run. For the purpose of this guide, we’ll assume that you’re choosing a tile backsplash for your kitchen remodel.

Do You Want Plain Tile or Patterned Tile?

Tile can be subdivided into dozens of categories, but the two major groupings are patterned tile and solid-color tile. Mosaic tile could be grouped with patterned tile, since it includes several colors, sheens and sizes all at once.

If you have a busy countertop, you may want to choose a plain tile for your kitchen backsplash. If your stone has a subtle pattern, you could use a bold pattern on the walls. You don’t want two busy patterns because that will be jarring to look at. Instead, you’ll want a balance of boldness and subtlety within your kitchen. The design experts here at O’Hanlon Kitchens would be happy to assist you.

What Color and Shape Best Complement Your Kitchen Style?

The style of your kitchen should influence the tile for your kitchen backsplash. If you have a Scandinavian style, you may choose a simple subway tile backsplash. If you have a traditional kitchen style, you may opt for stone tile that pulls some of the colors from your countertops.

In terms of color, you’ll want a backsplash that fits the other finishes in the kitchen. Pull inspiration from your floors, cabinets and countertops. You could also consider paint color in your decision, but paint is easy to change afterward. Imagine what the tile will look like as you walk into the room. What color would tie everything together? Do you want something light and bright, or would you prefer a dark contrast?

We typically recommend neutral colors for all kitchen finishes, simply because of their versatility. You can change pops of color in the space by swapping out décor. That is easier than changing out the kitchen backsplash, and it maximizes your return on investment.

Do You Want the Tile to Lay Vertically or Horizontally?

The orientation of your tile matters just as much as the shape. A recent trend in kitchen backsplashes is to hang tile vertically, instead of horizontally. This emphasizes the height of the ceiling, which can be particularly helpful in smaller spaces. You could even go a step further and use a herringbone pattern or hang your tile at an angle. Play around with orientation options when picking out a kitchen backsplash.

Consider a Design Accent above the Stove

In many kitchens, the area above the stove is the perfect place for a special feature. This is usually a square or rectangle of tile that looks slightly different than the rest of the backsplash. If you had a horizontal faux brick backsplash, your accent could be a herringbone pattern of brick with a square border. These small changes help make your kitchen look personalized and well thought out.

Don’t Forget about the Grout for Your Perfect Kitchen Backsplash!

As you plan your kitchen remodel, don’t forget about the grout color between the tile. White subway tiles look dramatically different when they have white grout vs. colored grout. With white grout, the tiles look like a seamless wall. With colored grout, each individual tile stands out on its own. Choose a grout color that pulls from the tile, the countertops, or the wall color, keeping in mind that white grout may be slightly harder to clean.
