Pros and Cons of Shaker Style Cabinets

There are many cabinet styles for kitchen remodeling. None have stood the test of time as well as Shaker style cabinets. This minimalistic design works well in a variety of homes, and it can transition with changes in color schemes, tile choices, countertops, and more. Let’s explore the pros and const of Shaker cabinets to determine if they are right for you.

What Are Shaker Cabinets?

The Shakers were a religious group that came to the U.S. in the late 1800’s. They were superior craftsmen that believed in using minimal materials in their work. Shaker-style cabinets became popular in the early 1900’s, and they have resurfaced in popularity over the last decade.

Shaker cabinets are sleek, simplistic, and versatile. Cabinet doors typically comprise of a flat panel with a simple border around the edges. There is no intricate routing work or beveling on these door-fronts. In some cases, Shaker style drawers will be made with the same design. However, the drawer fronts may also be left as flat panels with no border around them.

Shaker cabinets can be made of many materials. In modern design, they are often seen painted white or grey. Shaker cabinets are often paired with basic hardware that complements their minimalistic design.

Benefits of Shaker Style Cabinets

The simplicity of Shaker cabinets gives them a timeless design that can transition through the decades. The cabinets can be stained or painted to make them more personalized. They also act as a good canvas for creative hardware choices.

Another significant advantage to Shaker kitchen cabinets is that they are easy to maintain. There are few surfaces on the cabinets to collect dirt, grease and debris. It takes minimal effort to wipe the cabinets down, and they stay looking clean much longer than ornate cabinet styles.

From a resale perspective, Shaker cabinets appeal to a wide range of buyers. They are modern enough for young homebuyers, but they have a classic appeal for older buyers.  They also tend to be more affordable than decorative kitchen cabinets, allowing homeowners to maximize return-on-investment with kitchen remodeling.

Disadvantages to Shaker Kitchen Cabinets

Because Shaker cabinets are so minimalistic, they may not fit into all home styles. If you have elaborate columns and molding throughout your home, the Shaker style may appear bland by comparison. Shaker may also turn away potential buyers who are looking for high-end home finishes. This style appeals to most buyers, but there will be a pool of buyers that are looking for ‘more.’ You have to weigh the pros and cons of Shaker cabinets to determine if they are the right fit for your home.

Are Shaker Style Cabinets Right for My Home?

For the most part, you can’t go wrong with a set of Shaker cabinets. If you have a home with ornate finishes though, you may prefer cabinets with more detaining on the doors.
