Kitchen Outlets Placement for Your Kitchen Design

You use your kitchen outlets every day, but do you ever stop to think about where they’re positioned? If you’re remodeling your kitchen, this is the perfect time to create a more convenient outlet placement. Here are some quick tips to modernize your kitchen outlets.

Common Places for Kitchen Outlets

Older kitchens weren’t designed for modern appliances. Many only had outlets for the refrigerator, microwave, and other essential appliances. Today’s kitchens need outlets for countertop appliances, phone chargers, wax warmers, smart speakers and a myriad of other electronics. Some common places for kitchen outlets include:

  • Along the kitchen backsplash
  • On the kitchen island
  • Near light switches
  • Inside select cabinets for microwave plugs, garbage disposals, etc.
  • Anywhere you would naturally plug in an appliance

You may already have some outlets in these places, but perhaps not enough. Keep that in mind as you design your new kitchen. It’s easier to adjust the wiring when the kitchen is gutted than it is to work in a fully finished kitchen.

Unexpected Outlet Placement You May Want to Include

The beauty of kitchen design is that you can personalize it to fit your needs. If you want outlets every 12 inches because you run an in-home bakery, go for it! If you want a plug by the sink to charge your tablet, you can make that happen. Think of anywhere you wish you had an outlet right now, and incorporate that into your new outlet placement.

How to Camouflage Your Kitchen Outlets

If you’re worried about how your new outlets will look, there are a few ways to disguise them. The easiest way is to choose outlet covers that blend with your backsplash/cabinets. If you have a simple white subway backsplash, simple white outlet covers will blend in.

This gets trickier when you have a multicolored backsplash or a unique color that isn’t common for outlets. At that point, you may want to test different outlet covers to see which one is least noticeable.

On the flip side, you could choose outlets and outlet covers that purposefully stand out. You may want a decorative metallic cover or something with a fun pattern on it. This is your kitchen. Do what feels right to you!
