Slim Shaker Cabinets: An Upgrade to a Timeless Cabinet Style

If you like the look of shaker cabinets but think they’re a little too common, slim shaker may be the perfect option for you. This is a modern take on a classic design, and it’s just as timeless as its predecessor. Let’s take a look at how slim shaker compares to other cabinet styles to decide if they’re right for your kitchen.

What Are Slim Shaker Cabinets?

Also known as skinny shaker or thin shaker, these cabinets are designed to mimic the classic shaker style. Traditional shaker has a 2-3″ flat border around the edges of the cabinet doors, but slim shaker only has a ½-1″ border.

Both styles of cabinets have a minimalistic appearance that works well in a wide range of design styles. Whether you have an ultra-contemporary home or something more traditional, shaker and slim shaker cabinets can fit your style well.

Benefits of Slim Shaker Cabinets

Skinny shaker cabinets are versatile and can transition well through changing trends. The lack of ornate border trim makes these cabinets easy to clean and maintain. If you want to paint or stain the cabinets in the future, you won’t need as much prep work as you would with an intricate cabinet trim.

Thin shaker isn’t as common as traditional shaker, so it can help your kitchen stand out from the competition. This might be the feature that sets your home apart if you list it for sale. With that in mind, it’s not so unique that it may alienate a pool of buyers. Just about everyone likes the look of slim shaker.

Slim Shaker vs. Traditional Shaker Cabinets

Both forms of shaker cabinets are considered timeless designs, so you can’t go wrong with either of them. However, the skinny trim around the slim shaker doors can make hardware selection a bit limited. With more than 2 inches of border to work with on standard shaker cabinets, you can choose from tons of drawer pulls and door handles. With the slimmer trim, you may want hidden pulls or thin pulls that won’t overwhelm the border.

Some forms of skinny shaker are more expensive than traditional shaker. This isn’t always the case though, as there are expansive price ranges for both options. You may find traditional shaker in more colors and stains, but both cabinet styles can be customized to fit your needs.

Slim Shaker vs. Raised Panel Cabinets

Raised panel cabinets are slightly more intricate than shaker styles, but not so ornate that they may become dated in a few years. Raised panel doors may cost slightly more than slim shaker, but once again, that depends on materials. If you want a truly contemporary design, opt for the skinny shaker. If you’d rather have a tried and true cabinet design, raised panel is a great bet.

Slim Shaker vs. Flat Panel Cabinets

Flat panel cabinets have no border trim. The cabinet doors and drawer fronts are indeed flat panels. This creates a clean look that works well for modern homes, but many homeowners want more depth on their cabinet designs. Flat panel cabinets offer more hardware placement options than slim shaker, but both options fall into the contemporary design category.
