Kitchen Remodeling Timeline: What to Expect at Every Step

If you’ve never gone through a kitchen remodel before, you may feel overwhelmed with decisions. When does the tile go in? How long does it take to get new cabinets? There are many factors that influence the kitchen remodeling timeline, but the steps are generally the same for each project. Read on to learn the steps for kitchen remodeling.

Step 1 & 2 – Create a Budget and Get a Kitchen Design Consultation

Steps one and two are somewhat interchangeable. Some homeowners like to set up a budget first and then get a kitchen remodeling quote that aligns with it. Others prefer to get a quote for what they want, then save/borrow enough funds to accommodate that.

As you create your kitchen remodeling budget, set aside an extra 10% as a buffer. If your new kitchen costs $20,000, make sure you have $22,000 available. If you don’t need that extra 10%, great! But if something unexpected arises, you’re prepared to take it on.

During your design consultation, the designer will ask what you want to achieve with your new kitchen. Do you want a more functional kitchen layout, or do you simply want new cabinets and countertops? You can finalize material selections at a later time, but this will set the foundation for your remodel.

Step 3 – View Sample Materials and Make Design Decision

Once you’ve established a budget and the general parameters for your kitchen remodel, you can start to put together the design. You’ll see samples of cabinets, countertops, backsplash tiles and more to create a cohesive look for your new kitchen.

Your designer can help you find a combination of materials that best fit your budget. If you want to prioritize your cabinets, you may opt for a less expensive backsplash. If your main focus is the countertops, you may cut the budget for other areas. This is a delicate balance, but a seasoned designer can help you navigate it.

Step 4 – Demo and Installation

With the materials chosen, your design team can get to work installing your new kitchen. The timeframe for kitchen remodeling varies greatly by project. O’Hanlon Kitchens offers a 10 day kitchen transformation where we replace your cabinets and countertops. If you have a complete kitchen remodel, it may take longer than that based on materials and labor.

Your project manager can give you an estimate for demo and installation time based on the scope of the remodel.

Step 5 – Final Touches and Cleanup

With the new kitchen in place, all that’s left is cleanup and final details. Installing the cabinet hardware, caulking where needed, doing touchup paint – those are the last minute steps in kitchen remodeling. You’ll be able to see your kitchen throughout the process, so you can request changes as needed. Then you can enjoy your new kitchen!

How Long Is the Total Kitchen Remodeling Timeline?

Most homeowners have a 2-6 week kitchen remodeling timeline. However, if you are doing a major renovation such as removing a wall or relocating plumbing, it may take longer than that to get building permits. It’s also important to note that supply chain issues may cause delays for certain materials, especially when it comes to custom cabinetry. Your design team will give you a transparent estimate for when your project can be completed.
