Important Considerations for New Kitchen Cabinets

Planning to get new kitchen cabinets? If so, there are many factors you need to keep in mind. Making the right decisions from the start will ensure you love your new kitchen for years to come. Check out these tips for choosing new kitchen cabinets, courtesy of O’Hanlon Kitchens, Inc.

Standard Sizes vs. Custom Cabinets

Many cabinets come in standard sizes. The dimensions of these cabinets fit most kitchen floor plans, and they are more readily available than custom cabinets. Standard cabinets are typically less expensive than custom cabinets, depending on the materials they’re made from.

If you can use standard sizes without compromising the integrity and flow of your kitchen, that is a great way to save time and money. If you want a one-of-a-kind kitchen, custom cabinets are the way to go. Weigh out the price and versatility of both options to choose the right style for your kitchen.

Real Wood vs. MDF

We always recommend real wood over medium-density fiberboard (MDF). MDF cabinets are less expensive, and they can look good during the initial installation. The problem is, they are not built to last like wood cabinets. They are also difficult to refinish, and they are prone to water damage – particularly under the sink. To get the biggest return on investment, you’ll want to go for wood cabinets.

Cabinet Space vs. Drawer Space

Another factor to consider is what type of storage you want in your new kitchen cabinets. If you’re a person who likes having drawers, make sure there are plenty of drawers in your lower cabinets. If you prefer cabinets with shelves inside, you might not have as many drawers to choose from. Think about where your silverware and other utensils will go. Then make sure you choose cabinets with space for those tools.

Are You Changing Your Kitchen Layout?

If your current kitchen does not flow well or feel open, you may want to change the kitchen layout. For instance, you may blow out a wall in your galley kitchen to connect it with the main room of the house. Then you can do a big island with bar seating in the area where the wall used to be. If you are changing your kitchen layout, you will inevitably change your cabinets.

Can Your New Kitchen Cabinets Go to the Ceiling?

A recent trend in kitchen remodeling is running cabinets all the way to the ceiling. If you have space above your upper cabinets currently, you may consider a taller option for the new cabinets. This will maximize your storage options and draw your eye up the wall. That makes your kitchen feel bigger and grander.

If you have tall ceilings, you may even be able to double stack your upper cabinets. That means running a row of cabinets above the standard-height row. If you are eliminating some available wall space, this is a good way to regain that storage.

Who Will You Trust for Kitchen Cabinet Installation?

When you decide you want new kitchen cabinets, you need to choose a trustworthy team to install them. Properly-laid cabinets can last for decades, and quality craftsmanship is timeless. Don’t skimp on the installation costs. Faulty installation can make even expensive cabinets look cheap and tacky.
